Time

It's been two years since Slaw Dog's going away party. He has traveled half way around the world for business, pleasure and of course, Peachtree Road Boot Camp. Many of the folks he worked out with before his baby was born are still here today.

Our workout is 7 1/2 years old. We have had the pleasure to work out with a thousand people. The core that has remained in the workout is cheating father time. While our friends outside the workout are getting older, slower, fatter, we are lean, fast and spry.

Pictured above, Slaw Dog has his arm around the birthday girl in the MLK Day 5K shirt. Its our understanding that when Holly was born, the Korean war was till being fought and Harry Truman was still President. Special request: we do 2 sets of 30 for each stop.

The days come and go. We have good days and bad days. Some days we win, some days we get second. Every day, come hell or high water, we meet and exercise. This ritual keeps us grounded, connected and vibrant. Every single person that shows up contributes the workout.

Junk Miles

"Junk miles" is the running done at 9 1/2 minutes/mile or slower. Junk Miles are worthless, add little to fitness and contribute to injury. Our beautiful instructor Jenna Downey had incredible difficulty instructing Boot Camp because the junk miles kept hurting her. Running slow is not natural. Shuffling our feet and barely lifting our knees is NOT running. It could be called jogging. We like to call them junk miles.

There is no range of motion in the stride and our heart rate is only slightly elevated during junk miles. Junk miles are unnecessary pounding and do not produce the desired result in fitness.

We have been picking up the pace lately. The scout team has been getting faster and we are incorporating more drills (High Knees & Butt Kickers) to cut down on junk miles. There has been a little more attention to pace and form lately.

We ran the ramp this morning at the end of the workout. Hill running on the ramp is the best running we do in boot camp right now. The entire group looked beautiful hammering this morning. The exercises between sets on the ramp give us just enough time to recover and catch our breath before the next set of hills. That is the kind of training that turns us into super studs and robobabes.

The history center route was faster last week. The faster paces produce a higher calorie burn per workout. We have always been called the "running boot camp." Hills, Stairs, longer runs, up tempo and long hard intervals have been a hallmark of ours. We are in so much better shape than the other fitness programs because we get after it in the workouts.

Running fast produces fast running. In all our years of hard training there had been one constant:

FAST = THIN

MOON

http://www.space.com/23247-lunar-eclipse-full-moon-webcast.html

The full moon will dip into Earth's shadow tonight (Oct. 18), producing a lunar eclipse that can be seen by keen observers around the world.
Weather permitting, skywatchers in Africa, Europe, western Asia, and the eastern parts of North and South America will get the chance to observe part of the southern portion of the moon passing into Earth's penumbra — the planet's outer shadow.

The shading will be subtle, but during the penumbral lunar eclipse, the moon will be partially in shadow for about four hours with the time of deepest eclipse occurring at 7:50 p.m. EDT (2350 GMT). At that moment, the Earth's outer shadow will cover 76.5 percent of the lunar disk.

Boot Camp witnessed a remarkable moon this morning. The morning mist covered the back of Bobby Jones and the FULL moon was low above the oaks. It was the most remarkable scene this year. A nice crowd enjoyed it.

Control

Control is an ancient fantasy

While we trick ourselves to believe we are in control of much, we often discover that we are in control of little.

Exercise and Personal Fitness is one area where we can get much more control. Choosing a fitness program that works for us and devoting ourselves to the program can give us a feeling of control. As our fitness progresses, we are empowered by the knowledge that our hard work is producing the desired outcome. The workout can be the ultimate control freak ego trip, if we allow it.

Warning: Atlanta Elite Boot Camp produces top level fitness fanatics. Extreme fitness may also produce a burning desire to announce our presence with authority. Please use discretion when showing off.

Family

When newcomers join Boot Camp, they are usually looking for fitness. We have all the fitness they need. Those that stick around find something different. They discover friendships.

As it turns out, people who run around town in their underwear following the direction of a lunatic have something in common. They are crazy. These birds of a feather find a kinship in the workout that may not even be available in their own families.

As Boot Camp becomes our extended family, we do stuff together outside of the workout. We go to weddings, funerals, parties, vacations, work functions, play dates, sporting events and much more. We may at sometimes be a dysfunctional family but, when one of us falls, the others are there to pick them up.

Jenny took a hit yesterday and visited the hospital. Love had a scary allergic reaction to the grass (chemicals) that sent her to the hospital. On both occasions, folks were there watching over them.
